The Village of Mount Pleasant on Tuesday, April 7, will conduct a controlled (prescribed) burn of the vegetation along the central section of the Pike River corridor between STH 20/Washington Avenue and STH 11/Durand Avenue.
The Pike River Pathway along the burn area, specifically Phases 4 and 5 of the pathway, will be posted as closed while the burn is being conducted. The controlled burns in the Pike River corridor reduce wildfire risks, stimulate native vegetation growth, and clear invasive plants that would otherwise threaten the native plants and wildflowers that insects, birds, and other wildlife depend on. The burns are part of the Village’s ongoing effort to protect natural habitats along 5 miles of the Pike River that were created in a restoration project that started in 2000 and continues today.
The Village has contracted with private environmental consulting firm Heartland Ecological Group to conduct this burn. Public safety during the execution of these burns is of paramount concern. Heartland Ecological is working with officials from the Mount Pleasant Fire, Police, and Engineering departments to ensure these burns meet ecological goals and minimize risks to public health and safety.
Several weather parameters need to fall into alignment for this burn to take place, including wind direction, wind speed, air temperature, and relative humidity. For this reason, no more than a 24-hour notice can be provided to the Village or local residents. This burn will take several hours to complete.
For questions regarding the prescribed burn, please contact Village Hall at (262) 664-7800.
