Animal Bites
Steps to follow if your animal bites someone
If your animal bites someone, it is village ordinance to report the bite to the
Police Department. A police officer will order you to bring the animal to a
veterinarian within 24 hours, or the next business day, for an examination.
-
After the initial examination, you must immediately return the signed form to
the Environmental Health Division. If you fail to have your animal examined by
a veterinarian or fail to return the signed form, your animal may be seized and
impounded (at your expense) and you may be fined.
-
If your animal is not currently vaccinated against rabies, you must have the
animal QUARANTINED at a veterinarian's office or isolation facility for a
period of at least 10 days after the bite (at your expense).
-
If your animal is currently vaccinated against rabies, you may quarantine your
animal at home for a period of at least 10 days after the bite.
-
In all cases, the animal must have 3 examinations: the initial exam (day 1),
intermediate exam and final exam (day 10).
-
In all cases, a veterinarian must sign an examination form indicating that your
animal was examined at each of the visits. The signed form must be returned to
the Caledonia/Mt. Pleasant Health Department no later than 24 hours after each
visit. If you do not return the signed veterinarian's form to the Caledonia/Mt.
Pleasant Health Department after each examination, you may be fined and your
animal may be seized and impounded.
-
Return the signed form (within 24 hours) to:
